How much does SEO actually cost in New Zealand?

SEO pricing in NZ ranges from '$99 a month' to thousands — and most of what's in the middle is either a bargain or a rip-off. Here's what you actually get for each tier, honestly.

How much does SEO actually cost in New Zealand?

Type 'how much does SEO cost' into Google and you'll get three answers: 'it depends', 'from $99 a month', and someone trying to book a sales call before they'll tell you a number. None of that helps. So here's the honest version, in real New Zealand dollars, for a real small business.

Why SEO pricing is all over the show

SEO isn't one thing — it's a bundle: technical fixes, on-page optimisation, local SEO (your Google Business Profile), content, links, and reporting. Some providers bundle all of it, some do one piece and call it SEO. That's why a $99 plan and a $999 plan can sound identical and be completely different. The price tells you the scope, not the label.

The three honest tiers

Tier one — the $99–$150 'set and forget' plan. Usually this is automated directory submissions, a monthly ranking report, and not much else. Fine for a business that just wants to tick the box, but it won't move the needle in a competitive market. It's SEO-shaped, not SEO-effective.

Tier two — the $300–$600 ongoing plan. This is where real SEO lives for most Kiwi small businesses. On-page optimisation, a Google Business Profile that's actively managed, regular content written for your services and areas, review generation, and monthly reporting. Done consistently, this is what gets you onto page one and keeps you there.

Tier three — $800 and up, for competitive markets or multiple locations. Full strategy, more content, active link-building, technical deep-dives, and dedicated management. Worth it when you're in a tough market (Auckland trades, Wellington legal, anything with heavy competition) and the maths works out — one extra job a month pays for it.

What you're actually paying for

Strategy (which keywords to chase and in what order), content (pages written to rank for real searches), local SEO (your map listing and reviews), technical health (speed, mobile, structure), and reporting (so you can see it's working). The cheap plans usually skip content and links — which happen to be the two things that actually move rankings. Funny, that.

SEO vs Google Ads for small business — which should you do?

The question the cheap quotes never answer

'How will I know it's working?' A real SEO plan gives you a live report — traffic, rankings, and enquiries, in real numbers. A cheap one hands you a monthly PDF full of vanity metrics that don't connect to your phone ringing. If your provider can't show you actual enquiries from SEO, you're paying for theatre.

This is also why the free fundamentals matter — do those first, then layer paid SEO on top.

Rather just have us do this?

This is exactly what our monthly plans cover — one simple fee, no big upfront cost, and a team that gets it done.

How to show up on Google without paying a fortune

Bottom line: good SEO isn't cheap, but cheap SEO is the most expensive kind — you pay for years and get nothing. If you want a real number for your business and market, give us a yell. We'll tell you straight, even if the answer is 'you don't need the big plan yet.'
