Does my business really need a mobile app?

Everyone's got an app idea. Most of them don't need one. Here's how to tell if app development makes sense for your small business — or if a good website would do the job.

Does my business really need a mobile app?

Someone at a BBQ told you your business 'needs an app.' Now it's living rent-free in your head. Let's sort whether it's actually true, because app development is not cheap and most small businesses don't need one.

What an app is actually good at

Apps shine when people use your business repeatedly and want it one tap away — think a gym with check-ins and class bookings, a clinic with appointments, a loyalty program, or anything that sends push notifications people actually want. If your customers interact with you several times a month, an app can earn its keep.

Take bookings, for example — an app is one way to do that, but it's not the only way. Our booking-system piece covers the lighter-weight options first.

What an app is terrible at

Being found. People don't search the App Store for 'plumber Christchurch.' They Google it. So if your main goal is new customers finding you, spend that money on a proper website and SEO instead. An app won't help you get discovered — a website will.

Here's the secret: a really good mobile website can do 90% of what an app does — bookings, logins, payments, push-style notifications — without the download, the app-store approval, or the $30k build. For most small businesses, that's the smart play. Build the web version first. If it's a hit and people are begging for a home-screen icon, then make the app.

If you're selling stuff rather than booking services, ecommerce on the web is almost always the right starting point too.

The honest verdict

Need an app? Probably not yet. Need a website that works beautifully on a phone and does the app-ish things your customers actually want? Almost certainly yes. We build both — but we'll tell you which one you actually need, not the one that makes us more money. Give us a yell.
