How much does a website actually cost in New Zealand?

From $0 DIY jobs to $15k custom builds, website pricing in NZ is all over the show. Here's an honest breakdown of what you pay for — and what's a rip-off.

How much does a website actually cost in New Zealand?

Type 'how much does a website cost' into Google and you'll get answers ranging from 'free!' to 'twenty thousand dollars, easy.' Both are technically true. Neither is helpful. So let's be specific — for a normal Kiwi small business, in real money.

The three tiers, honestly

Tier one: the DIY builder. Wix, Squarespace, that sort of thing. You're looking at $20–$60 a month, plus your time — which is worth something, by the way. Fine for a starter site, painful to scale, and you own approximately nothing.

Tier two: a proper small business website, built by humans who know what they're doing. Somewhere in the $2k–$6k range, often with a small monthly care fee. This is where most of you should live. It's fast, it looks legit, it actually shows up on Google, and you don't have to learn what a plugin is.

Tier three: custom builds with logins, bookings, ecommerce, integrations — the works. $8k and up, scaling with ambition. Worth it when the site is genuinely doing work (taking bookings, selling stuff, replacing staff). Overkill if you just need to look professional.

What you're actually paying for

Strategy (what pages, what words, what order), design (making it not look like 2009), build (the actual code), and hosting/maintenance (keeping it alive). The cheap-cheap quotes usually skip strategy and maintenance — which is why those sites die quietly two years later.

"I'd tried two other agencies before. Found actually explained things in plain English and just got it done. No fluff."

Does my business actually need a website?

Still weighing a DIY builder against getting it done properly? We broke that down separately — it's the question we get most.

Rather just have us do this?

This is exactly what our monthly plans cover — one simple fee, no big upfront cost, and a team that gets it done.

Website builder vs a custom website — which wins?

Bottom line: a good website isn't cheap, but a cheap website usually costs you more in lost customers and redo's. If you want a real number for your specific business, give us a yell — we'll tell you straight, even if the answer is 'you don't need us yet.'
